KHRC is conducting an epidemiology study to assess plasmodium falciparum parasite prevalence and malaria control measures in catchment areas of two interventional studies pre- and post RTS,S/AS introduction (EPI-MAL-002 and EPI-MAL-003) to assess, in field conditions, vaccine benefit: risk in children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Subjects eligible to partake in the study are those aged between six months to less than ten years. The study would involve up to 10 annual cross-sectional surveys during malaria peak transmission. KHRC has so far conducted 8 surveys and is set to commence the next survey in September, 2022

Prior to the start of the epoch 9 survey, a study initiation was held by Iqvia monitors on behalf of the sponsor (GSK biologicals).

As part of the study initiation, the study team was given an overview of key areas of the study including, the study protocol, good clinical practice, consenting process, sample taking, storage and shipment, lessons learnt from previous surveys, study procedures, subject selections, inclusion and exclusion criteria, specimen collection and preparation, among others.
